RECALL/SAFETY NOTICE: PHILIPS RESPIRONICS MEDICAL DEVICES

Montreal, June 30, 2021 — The Order wishes to draw the attention of its members and also of the public to two notices recently issued by Philips Respironics, concerning certain models of CPAP/BiPAP and mechanical ventilators, due to potential risks for the health of patients. .

The manufacturer's recall/safety advisory advises the following actions*:

  • For people using CPAP/BiPAP models affected by the recall :
    • discontinue use and consult a physician to determine the benefits and risks of continuing treatment.
    • However , taking up an opinion from the American Thoracic Society (ATS), the Association of Respirologists of the Province of Quebec has issued, in a press release, the following recommendations:

“We recommend that patients on CPAP or NIV who have severe breathing difficulties, or who were very drowsy the day before their treatment, or have significant pulmonary, cardiovascular or neurological comorbidities or who work in critical positions a/ n safety (professional drivers, pilots, heavy machinery operators) we recommend not to stop treatment and then discuss with their doctor.

For other patients, Respironics suggests discontinuing treatment and the provider or MD should be contacted for an opinion on whether or not to continue treatment. »

  • For persons using mechanical respirator models affected by the recall :
    • Do not stop or change the prescribed treatment without consulting a doctor to determine the appropriate action to take.
    • Stop using ozone-based cleaners and follow the device's instruction manual for approved cleaning methods.
    • Proceed to device registration on the recall website.

In the meantime, the Order recalls that clinical judgment must prevail at all times, in order to ensure safe and optimal management of patients. The respiratory therapist must demonstrate availability and monitor the therapy in collaboration with the prescribing physician.
